The primary goal of ACAP Child & Family Services is to provide comprehensive,affordable, quality preschool and school-age programs to the citizens of Aroostook County.

Head Start

• Comprehensive preschool development program for children ages 3-5 from income-eligible families
• Educational activities that help children develop mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically
• Develops goals for children to achieve school readiness
• Values parents as a child’s first and most important teacher
• Dental, vision, hearing, nutritional, and developmental screenings and follow-up for all children
• Partnerships with parents to access resources in the community
• Licensed facilities in Fort Kent, Fort Fairfield, Caribou, Van Buren, Mars Hill, Dyer Brook, Danforth, Ashland, Washburn, Houlton, and Presque Isle offer traditional Head Start four days per week, four hours per day during the school year
• Full day/full year programs are available to income-eligible families who are working or going to school in Houlton, Fort Kent, Presque Isle and Caribou
• Meals are provided to children attending the program

Child Care

• Children from infancy to six years of age whose parents are employed, seeking employment, or are in training
• Licensed facilities in Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, and Houlton
• Age-appropriate curriculum to encourage children to develop to their highest potential
• ACAP centers providing child care are open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays
• Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are provided
• Voucher program provides financial assistance for parents to purchase child care services in their community
• Fees calculated on sliding fee scale according to gross monthly income and family size

After School Care

• For children 6-12 years of age who attend schools in the SAD#1, SAD #29, Caribou and Fort Kent
• Afternoon snacks are provided following the school day
• Full day care during school vacations includes breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack
• Opportunity to do homework, relax, socialize with peers
• Recreational activities
• Supervised child care in licensed facilities located in Presque Isle, Mapleton, Houlton, Fort Kent and Caribou

Resource Development Center (RDC)

• Coordinates existing child care services.
• Facilitates the development of new solutions to meet the changing needs of Aroostook County families, employers, child care providers and the community.
• Provides consumer education to parents seeking quality child care.
• Technical assistance to child care providers to help them better serve the families seeking quality child care in Aroostook County.
• Information to employers and the communities on child care statistics in Aroostook County.
• Develops, coordinates and offers training to child care providers. This has been accomplished through 180-hours of a statewide-standardized core knowledge training in child care developed by the Muskie School of Public Service's Maine Roads to Quality in collaboration with the Maine Resource Development Centers.
